Park Jae-sang (Korean박재상, 朴載相; born December 31, 1977), better known by his stage name PSY (Korean싸이IPA: [s͈ai]English: /ˈsaɪ/ sy), is a South Korean singer, songwriter, rapper, dancer, and record producer. During his time in the military, PSY served as a signalman in South Korea's 52th Army Infantry Divison, before returning to his singing career after being released from the military in July 2009.[1]
PSY is best known for his humorous videos and stage performances, and for his hit single "Gangnam Style", which became an Internet meme due to its popular promo video. He has appeared on numerous television programs, including The Ellen DeGeneres Show,[2] ExtraGood Sunday: X-ManThe Golden FisheryThe Today Show,[3] Saturday Night Live,[4] Sunrise, andThe X Factor Australia.[5] On October 23, 2012, PSY met UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon at the United Nations Headquarters where Ban expressed his desire to work with the singer because of his "unlimited global reach".[6] A few weeks later, PSY's Gangnam Style became the most accessed YouTube video of all time with almost a billion views, and PSY was subsequently recognized by the media as the "King of YouTube".[7][8] [9]
